W4 v Upminster 5s home 17th Jan 2026

Upminster had more of their regulars playing this time around, so were a stronger outfit. Thus, our 3-1 win (compared to 2-1 last time) was a good result.

In the first half we were a little lack-lustre (apart from Susy H who had obviously had her shredded wheat for breakfast), even though by half time we were 1-0 up. In the second half, however, we really seemed to get into gear and produced a great performance all round. We were more alert in stepping to the ball, our passes were more accurate and we just seemed to play with more intensity.

As far as goals were concerned, Scarlet managed a tricky deflection from a hard hit ball at a short corner to score our first. Maya popped in our second and Jemimah our third, both at fairly close range following neat stick work, in free play. At the other end of the pitch, Abi made an amazing save from a short corner rocket shot, but unfortunately, the resulting spin on the ball caused it to abruptly change direction and roll backwards into the goal. Abi expertly saved any other shots on goal with some excellent wide clearances.

We had 16 players this week, which can cause problems with continuity and confusion during changes, but we were very disciplined and managed the rotations smoothly.

In the MoM stakes, a tie in second place between Susy H, Isla, Mel and Ilayda, who all put in dynamic performances, but out in front with 6, very well deserved votes, was Maya, who was a "whizz", as Susy put it.

Well played everyone :)

Jane
