Old Loughtonians Women’s 1s ended up on the wrong side of a seven goal thriller in their penultimate game of the England Hockey Women’s Conference East season away at London Wayfarers.

Top scorer Maddy Newlyn scored her first of the day after only 6 minutes to put Loughts ahead against 3rd placed Wayfarers.

However 2 goals in a minute early in the second quarter saw Loughts fall behind to a strong Wayfarers side. Newlyn then leveled the score five minutes later as the sides reached the break all square at 2-2.

The game got away from Old Loughts in the third quarter as two goals within five minutes before the quarter end gave Wayfarers a comfortable two goal cushion heading into the final period.

However Newlyn was not finished as she completed her hat-trick to make it 4-3 with her 11th goal of the campaign with ten minutes remaining but it was not be for Loughts.

The season finale against local rivals Wapping W1s will be at Luxborough Lane on Saturday with both teams having already guaranteed National League hockey for next season and Loughts confirmed as finishing in a respectable 5th place regardless of the result.
